Star Wars: Rogue Planet Overview

MASTER AND APPRENTICE

The Force is strong in twelve-year-old Anakin Skywalker . . . so strong that the Jedi Council, despite misgivings, entrusted young Obi-Wan Kenobi with the mission of training him to become a Jedi Knight. Obi-Wan? like his slain Master Qui-Gon?believes Anakin may be the chosen one, the Jedi destined to bring balance to the Force. But first Obi-Wan must help his undisciplined apprentice, who still bears the scars of slavery, find his own balance.

Dispatched to the mysterious planet of Zonama Sekot, source of the fastest ships in the galaxy, Obi-Wan and Anakin are swept up in a swirl of deadly intrigue and betrayal. They sense a disturbance in the Force unlike any they have encountered before. It seems there are more secrets on Zonama Sekot than meet the eye. But the search for those secrets will threaten the bond between Obi-Wan and Anakin . . . and bring the troubled young apprentice face-to-face with his deepest fears?and his darkest destiny.

Star Wars: Rogue Planet Specifications

It's an unexpected combination: Greg Bear, author of so many ambitiously complex SF novels, writing about the colorful simplicities of the Star Wars universe. But he carries it off well, with a mix of action-adventure and thoughtful world building that entertains while keeping to the spirit of Lucas's saga.

A few years after the events of The Phantom Menace, young Anakin Skywalker is getting restless--sneaking away from Jedi Temple training to gamble his life in a flying game that's much more bizarre and dangerous than the movie's podracing, even before an alien Blood Carver assassin intervenes. Anakin's character is taking shape now:

But above all, he loved winning.

To turn the boy's frustrated energy to useful ends, the Jedi Council has Obi-Wan Kenobi take Anakin to investigate the remote, enigmatic world Zonama Sekot, whose organic technologies produce magnificent spacecraft, and where a Jedi has vanished without a trace. Secretly pursuing them is a battle squadron captained by the weapons designer who has already blueprinted the Death Star and is being double-crossed by his employer Commander Tarkin.

Rogue Planet's action climaxes as the Jedis learn to grow their own spaceship, the Blood Carver strikes, and two heavily armed fleets converge on helpless-seeming Zonama Sekot. Every faction has secret cards up its sleeve--and Anakin's is a very dangerous wild card indeed. There's final victory and heartbreak, but also loose ends (including even stranger, deadlier aliens) that suggest sequels to follow. Bear does a solidly workmanlike job. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk

Star Wars: Crosscurrent

Star Wars: Crosscurrent Review

What an amazing book.. The character/plot development which did nothing but build over 13 chapters leading to a climatic finish that will leave wanting more.

Paul S Kemp does an amazing job of painting 2 living worlds which incidentally are separated by 5,000 years, and weaves the fabric of each of the characters together in 1 plane of existence.

Although I do know the of the major points of the Star Wars EU (post RotJ), I haven't read any of the NJO or LotF series. When I heard about this book, I was concerned that I found find myself lost in cannon that I wouldn't understand. After 30 pages of reading, I found myself intoxicated with the Old Republic story line and couldn't wait to read more. I am a big fan of the Legacy comics and was very excited to see various members (who will remain nameless at this point) of the early "One Sith"..

*SPOILERS HERE ON OUT*

The Old Republic story line follows Sith Master Saes (a Kaleesh - the same species as General Grevious was prior to his cyborg transplant) aboard a Sith dreadnought "Harbringer" along with "Omen". The two ships harvest and transport a dark side ore that acts as a supercharger for those who are dark side sensitive for Naga Sadow. Successful delivery of the ore will all but seal the Jedi/galaxy's fate at the hands of the Sith.

The other plot line follows Jedi Master Jaden Korr in 41.5 AY who has a force vision, by way of voices from Dead Jedi/Sith alike (Mara Jade, Luminya, etc) urging him to go to a ice covered planet. In the vision he sees himself shrouded in the dark side along with force lightning sparking from his fingers. He ultimatlely hires two scoundrel salvagers (a Cerrean and human) to accompany him on his mission.

I won't ruin it for the rest of you, but let's just say that there will be one heck of a sequel!

Star Wars: Clone Wars Gambit: Stealth

Star Wars: Clone Wars Gambit: Stealth Review

Karen Miller's high regard and curiosity concerning Obi-Wan Kenobi is quite charming. In her second Star Wars book, Clone Wars Gambit: Stealth, every character has a lot to shoulder in the war, even (and especially) Obi-Wan.

Ahsoka has more to consider as Anakin's Padawan than the teachings of the Jedi Order. She cares for his well-being and has learned how to read her Master's emotions to help herself navigate and deal with his temperament. Anakin struggles with the responsibilities of being the Chosen One. What he feels they should do, what he should do as such a prominent figure, conflicts often with the wider doctrine of the Jedi, not to mention how delicately he juggles his forbidden relationship with Padmé. Obi-Wan still wrestles with his misgivings as a teacher and his emotions over the health of a dear friend. It's clear, though, that as Bail Organa brings a frightening new element in the war to the Jedi's attention, this cast of extraordinary beings have rather ordinary problems.

All things considered: Obi-Wan and Anakin, for as much as they remain larger than life figures, symbolic of the Jedi Order and its potential, are still forced to deal with their very human emotions and drama. After a harrowing skirmish on Kothlis, Anakin and Obi-Wan are forced to realize they both need some much needed rest. Obi-Wan is still running a bit ragged from his encounter on Zigoola; Anakin and the entire galaxy agree. The pair are sent to Lanteeb anyway--a planet of no consequence until recent Separatist actions pique the Republic's curiosity. Their physical wounds may be healed, but Anakin and Obi-Wan learn the hard way: some scars never go away.

Gambit: Stealth is the first in a two-part mini arc that ends on a bit of a cliff-hanger. While the Lanteeb mission propels the action forward, the dynamic between Anakin and Obi-Wan is the strongest undercurrent of the novel. As Karen Miller reminds us, it's rare at this point in the timeline for Obi-Wan and Anakin to run around together as they often did as Master and Apprentice. This realization is poignant when Obi-Wan considers his regret over Anakin; he wonders if Anakin ever really learned anything taught to him or if he'll ever learn. He frequently reminded himself he was no longer Anakin's Master--that old relationship is over, however much Anakin remains forever respectful of Obi-Wan.

Miller strategically removed Ahsoka from the narrative. This helped move us away from just seeing Anakin as a Jedi Knight (with a Padawan) to consider his new role and relationship with Obi-Wan. The two can now face each other as adults, so to speak. Anakin's undergone his right of passage and, while not an equal yet, is able to meet his former Master's gaze without the guilt or shame associated with having done something wrong. Obi-Wan's displeasure is the least thing from his mind. On this new, more level playing field, their dynamic comes to us as a war of values and beliefs.

Obi-Wan is the consummate, duty-bound Jedi: cool, professional, objective, detached. Anakin is demonstratively compassionate, always willing to help someone in need; his emotions are close to the surface where Obi-Wan's are tightly controlled. Anakin always feels the need to be involved. I think what Karen Miller does best--what she showed us in Wild Space--is her talent for creating character studies by placing two disparate personalities together and seeing what happens. In this case, two very different Jedi--one raised traditionally, the other not--ultimately come head-to-head in an argument fundamental to the the job description.

Obi-Wan learns quickly that old habits die hard. As he fights the urge to teach lest he offend Anakin's sensibilities and abilities as a Jedi Knight, he also works to understand the qualities in himself that have made him so different from his former Padawan. I loved the phrase Miller uses when she reminds us, "Obi-Wan Kenobi was a far more complicated man than a first glance would suggest" (p. 386). We learn, too, the dimensions of Obi-Wan's psyche that are just as warm and inviting as Anakin, but honed through years of rigorous discipline growing up surrounded by other Jedi. Obi-Wan's emotions are always checked by caution and propriety, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have them. He just deals with them differently. Karen Miller helps make this obvious through many touching scenes where Anakin is characteristically tormented and driven by his feelings, watched by Obi-Wan who must always remind him that the first thing about being a Jedi is prioritizing.

The two have never been more different, have never been more in tune to each other's strengths and weaknesses. Miller captures their relationship wonderfully. They banter and feed off each other's unspoken body language; they disagree and argue over intentions and dogma. Ultimately, they're very respectful of each other and mindful of the consequences each action or word may bring.

I was impressed before with the fresh perspective Miller brought to the Star Wars universe. With Gambit: Stealth she reminds readers what she does best is unearth the mechanics that drive characters like Obi-Wan to act as he does. I don't think we could ask for a more staunch supporter of such a wry manipulator.

As pleased as I was about this book, I am curious about one thing: if Star Wars has skittles, does that mean they have Starburst or Twix bars, too?

The Desperate Mission (Star Wars: The Last of the Jedi, Book 1)

The Desperate Mission (Star Wars: The Last of the Jedi, Book 1) Review

This series is the first Star Wars novel series I have purchased in many years. So far, I am pretty impressed. Yes, yes, it is geared to a younger audience, but agreeing with other reviewers, any age can appreciate this. It is nice to see a "snapshot" as it were of what Obi did while he was watching over Luke. I must admit, this is a good read. Just finishing this book, but I'm not sure what I feel about having a teenage Boba in the story line. Time will tell if, for my tastes, it is a good storyline.
I do like the mention of Qui-Gon though. Having not read any Star Wars recently, I don't know if he gets the "face time" as it were he deserves, but he is a wonderful, influential character in his own right. If the rest of the series is as good as this, it should be a good ride.
As I have not read the entire series at this point, I can and am only commenting on the individual books; how well they read, how well they are written, occasional comments on scenes, while trying not to spoil anything. I am trying to keep it to how I feel about the particular story and not tell the story. And so far, I am liking what I read.

Another excellent installment of Rebel Force. This one follow's Leia through her toughest challenge yet. She's going home. The sister planet Delaya where many of the Alderaan survivors have been taken in by the planet. Its amazing the stark differences between the two planets. Once again the charactorations are amazing. From Han sort of bonding with a Alderaan survivor to Luke's accidential kidnapping and the discover of exactly how well the survivors have been taken care off. I also enjoyed Fess who's idenity will probably be easy to figure out. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Omen

Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Omen Review

Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Omen Overview

The Jedi Order is in crisis. The late Jacen Solo’s shocking transformation into murderous Sith Lord Darth Caedus has cast a damning pall over those who wield the Force for good: Two Jedi Knights have succumbed to an inexplicable and dangerous psychosis, criminal charges have driven Luke Skywalker into self-imposed exile, and power-hungry Chief of State Natasi Daala is exploiting anti-Jedi sentiment to undermine the Order’s influence within the Galactic Alliance.

Forbidden to intervene in Jedi affairs, Luke is on a desperate mission to uncover the truth behind Jacen’s fall to the dark side–and to learn what’s turning peaceful Jedi into raving lunatics. But finding answers will mean venturing into the mind-bending space of the Kathol Rift and bargaining with an alien species as likely to destroy outsiders as deal with them. Still, there is no other choice and no time to lose, as the catastrophic events on Coruscant continue to escalate. Stricken by the same violent dementia that infected her brother, Valin, Jedi Knight Jysella Horn faces an equally grim fate after her capture by Natasi Daala’s police. And when Han and Leia Solo narrowly foil another deranged Jedi bent on deadly destruction, even acting Jedi Grand Master Kenth Hamner appears willing to bow to Daala’s iron will–at the expense of the Jedi Order.

But an even greater threat is looming. Millennia in the past, a Sith starship crashed on an unknown low-tech planet, leaving the survivors stranded. Over the generations, their numbers have grown, the ways of the dark side have been nurtured, and the time is fast approaching when this lost tribe of Sith will once more take to the stars to reclaim their legendary destiny as rulers of the galaxy. Only one thing stands in their way, a name whispered to them through the Force: Skywalker.

Order 66 (Star Wars: Republic Commando)

Order 66 (Star Wars: Republic Commando) Review

"An order was an order. And orders had to be followed, or else society fell apart."

The last book in the Republic Commando series! There was no way you could keep it from me. How would the clones that Karen Traviss has spent the last three books developing deal with this time altering order?

The clones from the last three books gear up in the final days of the war. Kal Skirata, den father, as it were, delves deeper into finding if the age acceleration can be reversed. Drama occurs between Ordo and Besany, Atin and Laseema, Darman and Etain, and Fi and Parja as they all deal with the "relationship" question. And pressure from the outside might force our courageous commandos to go into hiding far before the end of the war.

I Liked:
I tend to get a bit rambling here, so I want to streamline it for the ease of the reader and for the ease of the writer:
Writing
1.Karen Traviss pulls no punches. Right off the bat, not a page into the book, she has one of Jusik Bardan, who left the Jedi Order because of the hypocrisy of it, face another Jedi. Through his eyes, we see how desperate the Republic is to use a Jedi commander of such a young age, how, to the citizens of Coruscant (much like the citizens of America), life goes on as if there was no war, how maybe not everyone thinks the Jedi are peaches and cream, like so many Star Wars authors paint them, and how the Jedi are no better than the Separatists, if they are willing to resort to slave labor to fight their war. And this is only 4 pages into the book! Traviss continues this line into the book, showing the gray to the Jedi that most authors refuse to do, and revealing the errors, arrogance, and hypocrisy of the Jedi Order.
2.The Republic Commando books are thinking books. I love my brain candy, don't get me wrong, but sometimes, I think Star Wars authors try to hard to make brain candy and don't really sit to think through the situation. I would have loved to see Traviss write a book set in the New Republic era, when all the Empire attacks were occurring. Would she show how silly the New Republic was? How little better they were to the Empire that they were so against
Plot:
1.Why do the clone troopers have no problem turning on their Jedi commanding officers? This has been a question that has plagued me ever since I saw it on screen. Why? Was there no devotion, no growing attachment? Here we learn A) that Jedi aren't the all-loved beings that every other Star Wars novel paints them, B) many (I refuse to believe only Jusik and Etain treated their clone troopers like human beings) Jedi treated the clones like property, sub-beings, and C) the troopers are drilled to obey orders. So when the order comes through, they truly believe the Jedi are traitors to the Republic (which they were bred to serve). And because they are always told to follow orders, they do. I appreciate how KT solves this conundrum.
2.Etain realizes why the Jedi disapprove of attachment. In the previous books, Etain kept wondering why and then barrelling headlong into a relationship with Darman. Here, she learns, through relations with her son, why the Jedi don't like it. I appreciate Traviss even mentioning it (it would be very easy for her to have her characters refuse to admit there was a problem at all).
3.Trying to fit in other Star Wars Expanded Universe lore. Traviss brings up the horrid creation, Callista, from the horrid books by Barbara Hambly. I liked her thoughts, but would have enjoyed even more. I liked the foreshadowing of Order 66 with the revelation of 150 contingency orders. And learning why Jango sided with the Jedi, his mortal enemies, was very insightful indeed.
4.Once the words "Execute Order 66" appear on the page, the novel really goes into high gear. The pace picks up, the tension is high...who will come out alive and who will die?
5.Karen Traviss isn't afraid of killing off her own characters. After Michael Reaves copped out of having Darth Vader kill Jax in Coruscant Knights (sorry if I spoiled that for you), I was relieved to see KT wasn't like that. I won't say who or how many die, but she is realistic.
Characters:
1.Walon Vau. Man, this guy gets some of the best quotes, one of them being very similar to the one I used for the title of this review. I can really understand his mind, how he thinks. He may be apparently cold and emotionless, even the Jedi who feel him out think he is, but Walon Vau doesn't just do something because it feels right. He uses his mind. He calculates. And that is why I find him so fascinating!
2.Mandalorian culture. Again, Traviss imbues her novels with Mandalorian culture. I rather liked the marriage "ceremony" (though the frequency with which it occurred, I must disagree with), how is is a line said between the man and the woman together. And that is it. It fits with their culture well. Also, I like the warrior/family angle. It's nice not to have yet another pacifistic culture in the Star Wars universe. I know Star Wars is a big universe, but you have Alderaan and Camaas. You don't need Mandalorians too.
3.Favorite characters: Scorch (perhaps because he too holds himself, but isn't afraid to speak up about the injustices), Mij Gilamar (because it's too cool to have a Mando doctor, particularly one that reminds me of Dr. McCoy from Star Trek), Niner (whom I liked from HC, but can't get enough of), and Maze (because he is dedicated, he reads, and he endeavors to do his best at his job, doesn't want to desert at the drop of a hat).

I Didn't Like:
While I have a lot to admire about this book, I also have some complaints:
1.Unclear sense of morality. I love how so many characters (Kal, Besany) are considered "moral" when they still commit crimes. Espionage, treason, embezzlement, breaking and entering, impersonating Republic officials...those are crimes. Those are against the laws. Those are "wrong". Those are immoral. So, I would love for Traviss to be a bit more clear when she says Kal and Besany and whomever are so "moral". Does she mean that the characters want justice? What sort of justice? Who dictates what this justice is?
2."Let's get everyone married" mentality. Last book, it was "let's get everyone a girlfriend". Well, today's trend is marriage. Tomorrow's will probably be children. Nonetheless, while I enjoyed the marriage ceremony, I think doing it three...four...a billion times in the book (or mentioning it that many times) really deadens its impact. Make the ceremony special. Don't have everyone rushing out to get married to his/her significant other just before everyone dies. Some people will die without ever being married to his or her partner. Showing otherwise, in such a realistic book anyway, is fantastical.
3.Besany. I so don't like her, she gets her own bullet point. I am sick to death of her "so beautiful, it's a curse" characterization, so sick of hearing how quickly she helped out the Mandos, and how easily she can handle the fact her boyfriend/husband murders. She isn't that smart, clever, or anything. All she is is a girlfriend for one of the many clones. And her sudden attachment to Jilka and not wanting her to be blamed for Besany's treason? Where did that come from? When did she turn out to be a person who cared about someone who wasn't Mando?
4.Mandos are good, Jedi are bad. I do have a deeper appreciation for this, and am beginning to see the other side (and see that that view is often pushed by characters like Kal Skirata), but nonetheless, I wish that Traviss would tone down the Mando God complex. There is nothing the Mando's can't do. They are moral, they are strong, they are thoughtful, they are great warriors, they are great husbands, lovers, boyfriends, fathers, mothers, daughters, sons, and second-cousins twice removed, they are honorable, they are God incarnate. On the other hand, the Jedi are arrogant, demeaning, hypocrites, and oblivious. They all are glory-seekers, they all act like they know better, and they all treat clones like sub-humans. Again, I realize that many of the most guilty sections were written by Mandos, but still, I wish the virtues of General Zey and his actions were held in higher regard. Remember, Mandos are willing to be bought to fight someone's war. I do note that the Jedi fight the war to "save" the Republic, because they are arrogant enough to think they know what's best for it.
5.Etain and Jusik don't feel any sorrow for knowing many of their friends died in Order 66. Etain is too busy trying to leave and get to Darman and her son (understandable, but still, does she not have any pain or sympathy to her fellow Jedi?), and Jusik is too busy rallying the forces to care about Order 66. Even if they both disagree with the Jedi and their tenets, I have a hard time believing they would feel no sorrow, no loss, no tremors in the force as the people they loved and cared about died. What happened to the Obi-Wan feeling from "A New Hope", of a thousand voices crying out in terror being suddenly silenced? Jusik and Etain still use the Force, but can't feel the Jedi die through the Force? SPOILER: Jusik ought to feel something when Maze kills Zey, but no, nothing is ever mentioned. Because Zey was a good(ish) Jedi, not a Mando, and thus, not worthy of remembrance. END OF SPOILER.
6.The book is engaging enough, but the first part is pretty darn slow. I didn't realize it until the "Execute Order 66" line, but I wish KT could infuse a bit more action into her books, like she did with Hard Contact. Also, the Order came late into the book, and while I know the first part sets up for the second, I wish that the book focused more on the actual execution of Order 66 and not the prep.

Dialogue/Sexual Situations/Violence:
As always, the language is mad-up Star Wars (in this case, Mando) language. In some cases, it is pretty obvious what the "English" term would be.
Ordo is Besany's lover; Etain and Darman had a baby together. Laseema is oogled. Rather tame, on the whole.
The book is about commandos, so expect some gunplay, explosions, serious injuries, and character deaths.

Overall:
People have called these books many a thing, from the best thing to happen to Star Wars Expanded Universe to complete and utter heresy. But one thing remains: people talk about them endlessly. And how could you not? These books aren't like most of the Star Wars "dreck": they make you think. They force you to find your opinion and defend it. They bring to light parts of the Jedi that many don't like to see, but that are obvious, even if you only watch the movies.
So, in this final chapter of the Republic Commandos, I think I've finally gotten an idea of what the proponents of Karen Traviss' divisive books are talking about. Life is messy. The Jedi are messy. There is no easy answer. And anyone who says otherwise is lying to him or herself. For Triple Zero and True Colors, I voted three stars because of the slow story, huge cast of characters, and the Mandos are better than Jedi mentality. But in Order 66, I feel these problems are not so great. For not failing to point out the faults, for lighting the unlit, and for, above all, being entertaining, I give Order 66 a four stars.

*C.S. Light*

Star Wars: What Is A Wookiee? (DK Readers, Level 1)

Star Wars: What Is A Wookiee? (DK Readers, Level 1) Review

My 6-year-old son is a HUGE fan of Star Wars. We don't let him watch the cartoon and he has only seen the movies once, but he seems to know everything about this fictitious world! So, when I noticed him bringing home the DK readers from the school library (all the little boys race to get them at school every week and he can't always get there first!), I knew just what kind of books to buy so he always has some at home to read. It is very important to have books available on topics kids love so they will love reading! Good job DK. We are amassing quite a library and he is so proud that he can read them himself!

Star Wars Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook, Saga Edition

Star Wars Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook, Saga Edition Review

My first fave is 4e. That being said being my second favorite out of the plethora of games I've read and played? That's not a bad deal at all. (Number three would be Savage Worlds.)

Star Wars Saga if you couldn't guess is the current Star Wars system. It can be run in varying Eras of play depending on which supplement books you own or are willing to buy. The core book can be run in any Era of play and introduces you to the base mechanics of the game, which are in my opinion the best evolution of the 3e and Modern D20 rule sets. All of the good very little of the bad remains. That being said, it's not quite as refined as Fourth Edition in some places, but that's a minor quibble.

The previous two editions of Star wars were craptastic in gameplay and balance. *ESPECIALLY Ship Combat!* Force powers in the previous two editions were far too over the top to the point that much like a 3e caster frankly there wasn't a point in being anything else which really hurt the game. To say nothing of the over complicated skill list, rank system, and over abundance of Repeat Classes. In short they were a Train Wreck that we only played a handful of times.

Saga Fixes ALL of these problems of the 3e and Modern D20 line. It doesn't have healing surges, extended rests or milestones which are things I would really like to have. But the game is still amazingly good.

Shortly after 4e came out I turned a friend towards Saga because I wanted to see the game that helped 4e become what it was. I saw a really good system, possessing most of what I had done to 3e at my table house rule wise as it was and garbaging the things I didn't like. It also made me think This is Star Wars.

We played it shortly after I turned him over to it and it was a blast. I still had things I doubted about it, but for the most part those have gone away as rain drops of complaints in a sea of fantastic, fast and cinematic Gameplay. The system is also flexible enough that I can easily port it over to other Science Fiction settings. I'm presently working on Homebrew material to run a Mass Effect game.
My only regret? That I hadn't bought this system sooner.

Saga is going away after this year. So get it while you can. You won't be disappointed. If you like RPGS this is worth picking up. If you like Star Wars this is a must have. If you like Scifi in general this is a Must have. If you like all of the above you should be smacked for not owning this sooner!

Jedi Academy Training Manual (Star Wars Roleplaying Game)

Jedi Academy Training Manual (Star Wars Roleplaying Game) Review

This is book is perfect for those who are playing force users. It is obviously not for someone who is not a Jedi or the like.

The part I found the most impressive was the new Techniques and Force Powers. There are dozens of new Force Techniques for Jedi Knight level characters that enable them to capitalize on a combat form they may have chosen in the their first Jedi Knight level. These new Techniques allow some pretty fancy moves in combat and they are even more powerful if you have a specific fighting style. The new Force Powers are amazing as well. There are quite a few that I had just had to have for my character.

The book also expounds greatly on other Force using traditions other than the Jedi and Sith (though there is plenty on them too). There is also a chapter filled with characters from the movies and expanded universe like Corran Horn, all your favorites from Tales of the Jedi(the Qel-Dromas, Arca, Nomi Sunrider etc), a level 20 Jedi Grand Master Luke Skywalker, and even computer game hero Kyle Katarn. The bad guys get a chapter which includes a lot of EU guys and a section of Sith monsters.

The equipment section is lacking a bit, but that only makes sense I think. There are only so many types of lightsabers out there(there are about a dozen in this book though. The best equipment is the exhaustive list of lightsaber crystals.

There are no new prestige classes which I found a little odd.

There is gazetteer section like in the other books with places like Yavin 4, Ruusan, Dantooine, Ossus, Dxun, and Korriban.

Now, to address some of the complaints listed in other reviews. Someone was complaining about it being light. Well, the same person would probably complain about filler if it was too heavy. The 160 pages are packed all with good stuff that a DM or player can use. And, to it not being a stand-alone campaign setting like KotOR; it's not meant to be. It's essentially the Complete Jedi book (like the Complete Mage or Complete Divine DnD books). It's meant to help specialize a class and really make a unique character. Though, I most certainly agree with going to a store first looking through it to see if you want/need it. That's just smart shopping.

In short, it is a great book for anyone who wants to have beyond a core rule book Jedi! It is wonderful for players who want something special or for DMs who want some interesting enemies, allies, and settings for the players.

Heroes: A Pop-up Storybook (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)

Heroes: A Pop-up Storybook (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) Review

Young Star Wars readers will adore "Heroes." The book introduces some of the good guys in the CGI Clone Wars TV show. "Heroes" features Anakin Skywalker, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, R2-D2, Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex. Each page features a mini write-up on the character. A few comic book style panels show scenes of that character in the TV show. Some pages have an additional pop-up character. These somewhat hidden pop-ups include Kit Fisto, C-3PO and Commander Cody. Employing the most modern techniques for these sorts of books, the pop-ups are stunning. While opening, the characters often seem to jump into their pose. Moving the pages up and down, the figures seem to move naturally. The moving parts seem sturdy enough, so the book should get some good use before inevitably falling apart. The title is a nice accompaniment to "A Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy" and it makes readers anticipate the release of a corresponding "Villains." Delight any padawan reader with "Heroes."

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: The Visual Guide

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: The Visual Guide Review

What could be more appropriate than to talk about The Clone Wars Visual Guide on the day that the second season of the animated series of The Clone Wars opens on TV? The Visual Guide offers the reader an excellent look at the first season. The book is packed with shots from the series and explanations of what you are looking at. We learn about individuals such as the Jedi, clone troopers, Count Dooku, Asajj Ventress, Jabba the Hutt, etc. The various types of ships and weapons are covered, and brief scenes from some of the episodes are included.

This book is far from heavy reading as it lives up to its name by being predominately visual. The idea is to look at and study at your leisure many of the things you enjoyed watching in the TV series. The presentation of the material in the book is excellent, and the quality is first-rate.

I recommend that any fan of The Clone Wars take a look at The Visual Guide. I am confident that you will enjoy it, and I believe you may find reasons to go back and look at it again numerous times.

Star Wars 501st: An Imperial Commando Novel

Star Wars 501st: An Imperial Commando Novel Review

Good book holds to the series, look forward to the new storyline......buy it youll enjoy it.. but be sure to read the republic commando series first (which is terrific). The republic commando series provides great depth into why public opinion about the Jedi persona may not be so great. In that series you actually find yourself not really likeing the Jedi, wholy understanding why there is a mistrust and dislike for them and agreeing with it. This book is great because at this point your just vested in learning how Clan Skirata manages itself. Really read the reviews and decide that this is a worth while series you will not regret it....

Star Wars 501st: An Imperial Commando Novel Overview

The Clone Wars are over, but for those with reason to run from the new galactic Empire, the battle to survive has only just begun. . . .

The Jedi have been decimated in the Great Purge, and the Republic has fallen. Now the former Republic Commandos–the galaxy’s finest special forces troops, cloned from Jango Fett–find themselves on opposing sides and in very different armor. Some have deserted and fled to Mandalore with the mercenaries, renegade clone troopers, and rogue Jedi who make up Kal Skirata’s ragtag resistance to Imperial occupation. Others–including men from Delta and Omega squads–now serve as Imperial Commandos, a black ops unit within Vader’s own 501st Legion, tasked to hunt down fugitive Jedi and clone deserters. For Darman, grieving for his Jedi wife and separated from his son, it’s an agonizing test of loyalty. But he’s not the only one who’ll be forced to test the ties of brotherhood. On Mandalore, clone deserters and the planet’s own natives, who have no love for the Jedi, will have their most cherished beliefs challenged. In the savage new galactic order, old feuds may have to be set aside to unite against a far bigger threat, and nobody can take old loyalties for granted.

Battle at Teth (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)

Battle at Teth (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) Review

"Battle at Teth" retells a chapter from "The Clone Wars " film. As the title indicates, this picture book covers the Republic assault of the Separatist stronghold on Teth. The objective of the siege is the retrieval of Jabba the Hutt's son. Far from being a literal retelling, the focus and emphasis is curious. In the film, this sequence shows the development of Anakin Skywalker's relationship with his new Padawan, Ahsoka Tano. In contrast, Ahsoka isn't even mentioned in this book. Instead, the emphasis in put on the relationship between Anakin and Clone Captain Rex. Through loyalty and perseverance, they survive the campaign and succeed in their mission to rescue Rotta the Huttlet. Given the relatively large time frame, the book is quite abbreviated. Whether it's the ascent of the monastery wall or the duel with Asajj Ventress, the narrative moves quickly so there is little detail. This brevity is fine given the target audience of second and third graders. For a more indepth retelling of the battle, advanced readers (fourth graders) should get "The New Padawan." Kirsten Mayer's adaptation is good and the attractive illustrations were all lifted from the film. The page layouts fit galactic style. Packed with combat and military themes, this particular read will best appeal to the boys. "Battle at Teth" is a fun Clone Wars adventure.

Rebel Force: Firefight (Star Wars)

Rebel Force: Firefight (Star Wars) Review

These young adult books from Alex Wheeler and Jude Watson are a ton of fun for Star Wars fans of all ages! I was excited to see this Rebel Force series coming out to cover the time period where Luke is still learning his powers and the imperial presence is there and chaotic. This book was the first of this Rebel Force series to tie directly back to the "Jedi Apprentice", "Jedi Quest", and "Last of the Jedi" series with a main character related or descended from those books. I highly recommend you read ALL the Jedi Apprentice up thru Last of the Jedi series books in the order listed on Wikipedia for Star Wars books. They are very sequential - like reading episodes of a radio drama with cliff hanger endings. When I saw the appearance of one of the characters in this new book Firefight, I had to put the book down and start cheering, thinking about all the adventures that could happen with this character alive in the Rebellion Era. I had previously asked friends that read only the adult-targeted Star Wars books and comics, and they had not seen any of these characters from the Jude Watson books in the future. Bodes well that they are starting to get picked up by other authors and I hope to see much more in the near future!

BTW - I disagree with the other reviewer regarding action taking place on Kamino. It was an interesting and different take on that planet, one that was far from Tapoca City and had a more independent feel, with Kaminoans that were not as icy cool and perfect. No human cloning taking place at this location, and no background or further tie-in with stormtrooper history. Did have some hopes there when a mission to that location was proposed in the first chapter of this book.

Just read it and enjoy, look forward to more books from Wheeler, just wish they were getting published at a faster pace.

Star Wars Omnibus: Emissaries And Assassins Review

This book is an amazing collection of stories in the Star Wars universe. Emissaries opens on it's lowest note- a mostly boring redux of the Episode 1 movie (including an embarassing extra adventure starring Padme and Jar-Jar). That chapter partially redeems itself with a great version of the Darth Maul fight scene. The following episodes focus mostly on the adventures of Jedi who are not as prominent in the movies. Coneheaded Jedi Ki-Adi Mundi is a thrilling main character who is seen only briefly in episodes 1-3. The book concludes with the dark tale of Jango Fett, who Star Wars fans will immediately recognize. Emissaries is a fantastic compendium that any fan of the series will love. And given the length and quality of the artwork, you can't argue with the price.

Incredible Cross-sections of Star Wars, Episode III - Revenge of the Sith: The Definitive Guide to Spaceships and Vehicles

Incredible Cross-sections of Star Wars, Episode III - Revenge of the Sith: The Definitive Guide to Spaceships and Vehicles Review

STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH - INCREDIBLE CROSS-SECTIONS is so visually captivating and interesting that I don't quite know how to begin describing it. The incredibly detailed, superbly painted cutaways of the major vehicles and vessels of STAR WARS: Episode III provide for a unique experience in literature.

This book commands your attention as it forces you to soak in several intricately detailed paintings of the amazing craft of Episode III. The text that accompanies each picture provides excellent descriptions of each ship's engines, weapons systems, radiation, shielding, etc. and shows you how each individual part of the ship works. (The descriptions go in-depth so far, in fact, that they almost leave me wondering if any of the technology of STAR WARS might be possible. The credit for this must go to the author's degree in theoretical astrophysics.) Each craft also has a "Data File" text box for a quick analysis of the manufacturer, dimensions, hyperdrive, and maximum speed of the specific vehicle.

In contrast to all of the pros, I do have a couple of cons: grammar in some parts of the book is not quite as good as it should be for such a major work. Also, I found that beneath the protective jacket, the hardcover has little splotches of glue smeared on it. Though this isn't a problem at all for me, it might be one for someone who must have their books looking perfectly clean inside and out.

Overall, this book is an excellent work of art that is certainly worthy of STAR WARS fans' time and money. Its commitment to perfection in its utterly detailed and spectacular paintings and its very good descriptive writing easily give this book the power to hammer out its very minor flaws and earn itself 5 stars.

The New York Times Sunday Crossword Omnibus, Volume 4

The New York Times Sunday Crossword Omnibus, Volume 4 Review

This collection has what it takes to keep me happy. The book itself is a well made soft-bound type where the pages don't come out, but I don't have much trouble with them. I just fold the thing over and work on either side. You can use either pencil or pen, but pencil can get blurry... The puzzles are long enough to occupy my mind for a few hours each. The clues are mostly solveable with a fair amount of thinking and puzzling. I have to peek sometimes. I like this kind of action over a set that either has me in the back half the time or I'm never in the back and can get the puzzle done in under an hour. The time frame's pretty current, so you have to know your current history along with the stuff from the last decade, which is good, in my book- tripped me up a few times already.. All-in-all, I'd say it's standard fare for this particular line. If you've never tried these puzzles, give them a whirl. They give good value for your money. If you do them in pencil, they erase well, so you can replay the book a few times before it wears out. When I started this type of puzzle, I needed a dictionary a lot, but rarely do now, having learned how to constructively solve and get the maximum type of enjoyment these books offer.

The Making of Star Wars (TM): The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film

The Making of Star Wars (TM): The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film Review

J. W. Rinzler always delivers when it comes to documenting the making-of processes of movies. But I never thought he could out-do himself ten times over in this book. Very simply said: You will NEVER read a more comprehensive book about ANY movie... I mean EVER. Every single piece of information about the first Star Wars movie is simply there, from old early drafts (it is almost shocking how the original conception of the saga is so radically different from the final product, especially because the original script drafts have almost no humor) to the complete set of gorgeous Ralph McQuarrie paintings in full color and detail, to most models used in special effects to an almost breath-taking chronology of events, including money & ego troubles, set accidents, fights, and so much more.
Don't get me wrong, this is a long read, at more than 400 pages. It took me almost two months of occasional reading to complete it, but it was well worth it. Call this the ultimate Original Star Wars Bible if you will. The hardcover book contains some extra material including a complete set of storyboards and a cute little compilation of anecdotes written by Lucas about the backgrounds of the film's characters--they differ radically from the arcs and character backgrounds later provided by the prequels.
A must-read for every Star Wars fan. I can only hope Rinzler and Bouzeraou will do the same thing for Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

The Making of Star Wars (TM): The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film Overview

More than thirty years ago, filmmaker George Lucas realized a longtime dream, creating a swashbuckling sf saga inspired by vintage Flash Gordon serials, classic American westerns, the epic cinema of Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa, and mythological heroes. Its original title: The Star Wars. The rest is history–and how it was made is a story as entertaining and exciting as the movie that has enthralled millions for the past three decades.

Using his unprecedented access to the Lucasfilm Archives and its trove of never-before-published “lost” interviews, photos, production notes, factoids, and anecdotes, Star Wars scholar J. W. Rinzler hurtles readers back in time for an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at the nearly decade-long quest of George Lucas and his key collaborators to make the “little” movie that became a phenomenon. For the first time, it’s all here:

• the evolution of the now-classic story and characters–including “Annikin Starkiller” and “a huge green-skinned monster with no nose and large gills” named Han Solo
• excerpts from George Lucas’s numerous, ever-morphing script drafts
• the birth of Industrial Light & Magic, the special-effects company that revolutionized Hollywood filmmaking
• the grueling, nearly catastrophic location shoot in Tunisia and the following breakneck dash at Elstree Studios in London
• the intensive auditions that won the cast members their roles–and made them legends
• the who’s who of young 1970s film rebels who pitched in to help–including Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and Brian DePalma

But perhaps most exciting, and rarest of all, are the first interviews conducted before and during production and immediately after the release of Star Wars–in which George Lucas, the film’s stars, composer John Williams, effects masters Dennis Muren, Richard Edlund, and John Dykstra, Phil Tippett, Rick Baker, legendary production designer John Barry, and a host of others share their fascinating tales from the trenches and candid opinions of the movie that would ultimately change their lives.

No matter where you stand in the spectrum of this thirty-year phenomenon, The Making of Star Wars stands as a crucial document–rich in fascination and revelation–of a genuine cinematic and cultural touchstone.

Star Wars Omnibus: Tales of the Jedi, Vol. 2

Star Wars Omnibus: Tales of the Jedi, Vol. 2 Review

Of the many Star Wars comics issued by Dark Horse, the Tales of the Jedi line was far and away my favorite. The series' setting (5000 years before A New Hope) let authors Kevin J. Anderson and Tom Veitch really go wild in creating the early tales of the Jedi Knights and their Sith adversaries, and resulted in the creation of some of the Star Wars Universe's most memorable characters.

Since many of the original Tales of the Jedi trade paperbacks are out of print, Dark Horse has issued Omnibus collections of the Tales of the Jedi comics. This is the second volume, and it collects the following stories:

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi - The Freedon Nadd Uprising
This 2-issue series picked up where Ulic Qel Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon left off. Our young Jedi Knights are under assault from the ancient spirit of Sith Lord Freedon Nadd (no snickering please), and any victory they achieve may prove fleeting as secret Sith lore is brought back to the Republic by a pair of Dark Side wannabes. The artwork for this series was less than stellar.

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi - Dark Lords of the Sith
Two powerful young Jedi come too close to the Dark Side of the Force. Exar Kun seeks forbidden knowledge, and Ulic Qel Droma attempts to defeat the dark from within. These Jedi's journeys towards the Dark Side will lead to massive galactic conflict and the return of the Sith Empire. The artwork in this series is better than the Freedon Nadd Uprising, but not by much.

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi - The Sith War
Dark Lord of the Sith Exar Kun and his Sith disciples wage war on the Republic and their Jedi allies. The whole Tales of the Jedi saga has been leading up to this massive conflict. Dario Carasco brings some much needed detailed artwork to the series.

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi - Redemption
This long out of print saga takes place years after the close of the Sith War. Nomi Sunrider's daughter Vima seeks a Jedi to tutor her in the ways of the force, and has decided on the one man universally reviled for his role in the Sith War - Ulic Qel Droma. This gorgeously illustrated series is the perfect epilogue to the massive Tales of the Jedi saga.

I love the idea of these mid-priced Omnibus volumes, but am not crazy about their size. Compared to Marvel's larger Omnibus hardcovers, these smaller (they shaved roughly an inch from the height and width of the trade paperback size) paperback collections fall a bit short (no pun intended). Still, if you're new to the Tales of the Jedi series, or like me never got around to buying all of the trade paperbacks, they are an ideal way to get the most bang for your buck.

PS - For what it's worth, my copy of this Omnibus has a different cover than what is pictured. I'll try and upload a scan to show the difference.
