Betrayal (Star Wars: Legacy of the Force, Book 1) Overview

“[Betrayal] blasts off a new string of adventures starring beloved Star Wars familiars . . . this new installment should please Star Wars fans.”
–Publishers Weekly

Honor and duty collide with friendship and blood ties as the Skywalker and Solo clans find themselves on opposing sides of an explosive conflict.

When a mission to uncover an illegal missile factory on the planet Adumar ends in a violent ambush–from which Jedi Knight Jacen Solo and his protégé and cousin, Ben Skywalker, narrowly escape with their lives–it’s the most alarming evidence yet that political unrest is threatening to ignite into total rebellion. The specter of full-scale war looms between a growing cadre of defiant planets and the Galactic Alliance that some fear is becoming a new Empire.

Determined to root out those behind the mayhem, Jacen follows a trail of cryptic clues to a rendezvous with the most shocking of revelations. Meanwhile Luke grapples with something even more troubling: dream visions of a shadowy figure whose Force power and ruthlessness remind him of Darth Vader. If Luke’s visions come to pass, they will bring untold pain to the Jedi Master . . . and to the galaxy.

Star Wars: The Essential Atlas

Star Wars: The Essential Atlas Review

Though it's technically labeled as a new publication, not a revamp of the old 'essential' series, this is essentially a redux of the Essential Guide to Planets and Moons. I have that one too, and in this case (unlike most of the others) I can say with no reservations that it's a much better book. It includes many details missing from the old guide, such as population, imports/exports, number and type of moons, size of habitable planets, and species makeup. That's not all, though- the Atlas includes a general exposition on star travel, interstellar objects, tradelanes, a rundown of regions and politics, and a section on galactic history. There's also some amazingly detailed maps of the galaxy or galactic sectors, and- best of all- it's all in full color.

This book is one of the few out of the literally hundreds in print that I would say is a must-have for Star Wars fans. It'd be especially useful for those playing the Star Wars RPG. I've also bought the supplements for that game, and I must say that in many respects this is a much better (not to mention cheaper) resource. Whereas the Guide to Planets and Moons was more of a recap of events that took place in paperback novels, which just happened to organize it by worlds, this really is focused on the galaxy itself. Never has that been presented in such stunning detail; the charts alone are worth the price of admission.

Star Wars: The Essential Atlas Feature

Star Wars: The Essential Atlas is a galaxy-spanning trove of vital statistics and information ranging from the astronomical and geographical (“Systems, Sectors, Oversectors, and Regions”) to the historical and political (“The Sith Empire” and “The Great Hyperspace War”). Encompassing the entire Star Wars canon, including all the films, and the Clone Wars television series, plus the novels, comic books, video games, and more, this volume is packed with dozens of detailed maps and charts, as well as pertinent data and accompanying facts on

• the Empire: its length and breadth, political regions, populations, trade routes, major attractions, and trouble spots
• the Clone Wars: the trajectory of this decisive conflict across the universe, data on key battles and major Loyalist and Separatist worlds
• the adventures of Han Solo: the heroic rogue’s exploits throughout the galaxy–including his captaincy of the Millennium Falcon and his first, fateful meeting with Chewbacca–before his life-changing alliance with Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi
• the Sith Wars: the progression of the universal clash between the ancient Jedi Order, their dark side counterparts, and the Mandalorian warriors who fought against both orders
• and much, much more

From Hutt Space to the Unknown Regions, from the Knights of the Old Republic and Episode I to the Fate of the Jedi and Legacy era, Star Wars: The Essential Atlas is the ultimate gateway to space fantasy’s most brilliantly imagined and endlessly intriguing galaxy.

Dark Tide II: Ruin (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Book 3)

Dark Tide II: Ruin (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Book 3) Review

Ruin is the closing chapter in Michael Stackpole's Dark Tide duology, and the third book overall in the New Jedi Order saga. After making some gains against the Yuuzhan Vong's invasion of the galaxy, the Jedi Knights and New Republic military, assisted by the armed forces of the Imperial Remnant, gather for a grand confrontation over the fate of the planet Ithor.

While Dark Tide I: Onslaught (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Book 2) spread the spotlight on various Jedi and Rogue Squadron characters, Ruin really reads more like a Corran Horn adventure. Stackpole's signature contribution takes the starring role here, and those of us who enjoyed I, Jedi (Star Wars) and the X-Wing Rogue Squadron series know that that's not necessarily a bad thing. The Yuuzhan Vong play a more visible role in this novel than they did in Onslaught, and we finally get a better idea of what drives these technology hating and pain obsessed invaders.

If you don't mind Luke, the Solo kids, and pretty much everyone else taking a backseat to Corran Horn, Ruin should prove to be an exciting and enjoyable chapter in the New Jedi Order saga. Stackpole continues to show a flair for describing military action and starfighter battles, though his dialogue still tends towards the melodramatic. His characters tend to give introspective or inspirational speeches that nobody - in any galaxy - would ever say out loud. He also seems compelled to end each chapter with some bold declaration by one of the characters, which gets old fast.

Those gripes aside, Stackpole does a great job closing out this series within a series. The final confrontation between Corran and the Yuuzhan Vong leader Shedao Shai, and the unforeseen consequences of that action are more than worth the price of admission, and will have you wondering whether this is the final Corran Horn adventure.

Dark Tide II: Ruin (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Book 3) Feature

Dark Tide II: Ruin (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Book 3) Overview

The alien Yuuzhan Vong have launched an attack on the worlds of the Outer Rim. They are merciless, without regard for life - and they stand utterly outside the Force. Their ever-changing tactics stump the New Republic military. Even the Jedi, once the greatest guardians of peace in the galaxy, are rendered helpless by this impervious foe - and their solidarity has begun to unravel.

While Luke struggles to keep the Jedi together, Knights Jacen Solo and Corran Horn set off on a reconnaissance mission to the planet Garqi, an occupied world. There, at last, they uncover a secret that might be used to undermine the enemy - if only they can stay alive long enough to use it!

Star Wars: Visions: Limited Edition

Star Wars: Visions: Limited Edition Review

Star Wars: Visions: Limited Edition Overview

When Star Wars debuted in 1977, it revolutionized the visual landscape of mainstream American filmmaking, transporting fans to new galaxies and introducing them to countless now-classic characters, costumes, aliens, planets, and starships. By 2005, with the last film in theaters, the Star Wars Saga had become a phenomenon impacting cultures across the globe. From the beginning, the Star Wars aesthetic was influenced by comic book artists from the 1930s to the 1970s; famed illustrators Chesley Bonestell, John Berkey, Frank Frazetta, and others; as well as classical artists. Just as George Lucas drew upon the work of N. C. Wyeth and Norman Rockwell for his own visual inspiration, he has now invited more than 100 of the most well-known and promising working artists-across several disciplines, genres, and countries-to draw upon the entire Star Wars galaxy for inspiration. Star Wars: Visions collects these magnificent artworks for the first time. Featuring pieces by renowned artists such as Amano, Allan R. Banks, Harley Brown, Gary Carter, James Christensen, Michael Coleman, Kinuko Craft, Jim Dietz, Phillipe Druillet, Donato Giancola, Ann Hanson, H. R. Giger, Daniel Greene, Ron Kleeman, Arantza Martinez, Syd Mead, Moebius, Paul Oxborough, Alex Ross, Anthony J. Ryder, Dolfi Stoki, William Stout, Dan Thompson, Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo, Scott Waddell, Yuqi Wang, and Jamie Wyeth, Star Wars: Visions is a breakthrough tribute to the worldwide inspiration that Star Wars has fostered for over three decades. Star Wars Visions: Limited Edition features more than fifty paintings and illustrations not seen in the trade edition, as well as "behind-the-scenes" shots of artists' working processes, preporatory sketches, and more. Presented in a delux format, with a real-cloth cover and clamshell case, the Limited Edition also comes with five 10 x 12" high-quality archival giclee prints, signed by artists Jamie Wyeth, Alex Ross, Moebius, Donato Giancola, and Daniel Greene.

Galaxy of Intrigue: A Star Wars Roleplaying Game Supplement

Galaxy of Intrigue: A Star Wars Roleplaying Game Supplement Review

Galaxy of Intrigue is yet another solid supplement for the Star Wars Sage RPG, introducing the mechanic of skill challenges like in D&D 4e, using a series of skill rolls and roleplay to perform a task that wouldn't normally take just a single roll. In my opinion it's a great mechanic that melds dice rolling with the encouragement to roleplay your character and stress their abilities.
The usual assortment or additional species, equipment, droids, and ships are backed by a series of ready-to-run encounters, plot hooks, and campaign jump points.
Get it while you can, Wizards of the Coast has dropped the Lucasfilm license and the entire line will be out of print and off shelves before long. Ships of the Galaxy and Knights of the Old Republic are fetching upwards of on Ebay!

Star Wars Mad Libs

Star Wars Mad Libs Review

This was a stocking stuffer gift for our 7 yr old that turned out to more than worth it's cost. We played this round robin style with a group of 11 after dinner with each person (young as 5 and old as 73) supplying a word and the result was hysterical. Through the game my kids have learned parts of speech (what an adverb, adjective, noun) all while having fun ..even the grownups got a refresher. This brought young and old together after dinner, has a Star Wars theme and teaches you a little bit as well ...all for a few dollars.

The only negative thing I can say is that the sticker pages do not have numbers on them to match the page numbers. Clone Wars Adventures, Vol. 2 (Star Wars)

Clone Wars Adventures, Vol. 2 (Star Wars) Review

Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures is an ongoing series from Dark Horse comics that takes its inspiration from the extremely successful Clone Wars cartoon series. This inspiration is visible in both the short, action-packed nature of the stories as well as in the art style itself. Volume Two contains three stories as follows:

1) "Skywalkers" - Like Volume One, this book kicks off with an Obi-Wan/Anakin adventure. Their aerial antics defending the planet Terra Sool stretch belief about as far as this format can take it, but the cartoon did the same thing on more than one occasion. The chief distinguishing feature of this tale is the use of scenes from A New Hope to bookend it, making for an effective emotional underpinning to the action.

2) "Hide in Plain Sight" - Jedi Master Luminara Unduli and her Padawan Barriss Offee defend Nadiem against a Separatist attack personally coordinated by General Grievous. Great story all around, with a perfect balance of dry humor and fun Jedi action. The art in this one is particularly well done: the panels are jam-packed with small background details.

3) "Run Mace Run" - Shorter than the first two stories, Mace is involved in a nasty gunship crash on a Separatist-controlled planet. He must shake off the effects and stop a planet-destroying weapon from being tested. Yoda's Zen-like advice wafts through his head along the way. Not much substance to this story, but it does have a cool ending.

The first three volumes of this series use lower-quality paper than volumes IV and up and present ads for Dark Horse/Gentle Giant products between each of the stories. The choice to eliminate the ads and improve the book quality for subsequent volumes was a good one and makes the later books feel less disposable.

Clone Wars Adventures Volume Two continues the high standard set by the first volume.

Good book.
Good Voice acting.
Excellent story. Consistently building through disc 9 with a cliff hanger ending.

The Clone Wars Campaign Guide (Star Wars Roleplaying Game)

The Clone Wars Campaign Guide (Star Wars Roleplaying Game) Review

As my first actual campaign guide, this book blew me away with the amount of information it contains (in a good way). There are discussions on what the Force and Jedi were like in this time period, the Republic including both the military breakdown of units and the factions of the Galactic Senate, and a detailed description of the entities that make up the Confederacy of Independent Systems (Banking Clan, Techno Union, etc.)

The much-advertised "mass-combat system for resolving large-scale battles" is interesting to read, but it seems pretty complicated. I haven't put in the time to learn the rules, which looks to be a LOT of time and effort. I dare say that these rules are almost as confusing as the infamous grappling rules of other roleplaying games. Okay, not that bad, but, daunting enough that as a GM I I will have to spend a few more hours studying the system before I feel comfortable throwing mass-battles at my players.

The rules for Followers on the other hand, are pretty easy to grasp. Followers are inherently weaker so they don't overshadow other players' characters. It looks like it could be fun, but personally, I would not want to spend my precious talents on acquiring followers.

The only other thing that was disappointing (albeit something I expected) was the lack of famous Republic and Confederacy starships. They have plenty of the less well-known ships (and some popular ones like the Invisible Hand and Malevolence), but most of the silver-screen ships like the Venator-class Star Destroyer and the Banking Clan (Munificent-class) Frigate, are in the Starships of the Galaxy (Star Wars Roleplaying Game) supplement, so they didn't include them in here. They don't even have the V-19 Torrent, which has been made more popular by the animated series. I'm just glad I already have the Starships supplement so I can recreate exciting starship battles like the engagement over Ryloth as seen in the Clone Wars animated series. But then if you like starships like I do, you probably already own that book, too.

There isn't enough space in a review like this to cover all the awesome bits of info and new gameplay actions that make this book a good buy. Simply stated: if you want to play a Roleplaying adventure set in the Clone Wars era, this book is a must. Literally. You can't run a half-way decent campaign without this. If you aren't planning on having Clone Wars era adventures anytime soon, it won't hurt you to skip out on this one.

Star Trek: Enterprise: The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing (Star Trek : Enterprise)

Star Trek: Enterprise: The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing (Star Trek : Enterprise) Review

Michael A Martin has created a wonderful new Enterprise universe. After rushing events to conclude the final season of Star Trek Enterprise, the studio created more story questions than were answered. Martin has regrouped those questions and spun a web of story telling that any 21st century reader can appreciate. Deeply detailed, each scene setting is clear and authentic. In addition, the "bad guys" are only "bad guys" from a certain perspective. It is classic Star Trek in every well chosen word. As our world establishes new borders seemingly every day, so does this work. Each species and government, friend and foe alike, are embroiled in political machinations caused by mistrust, poor communication, and sometimes plain old ignorance. There is no cheating the reader with 24th century gizmo's. Star Trek Enterprise; The Romulan War brings us to the frustrating realities of time, distance, and the unpredictable nature of other beings and their technologies. Roddenberry's "Wagon train to the Stars" is in good hands, and hopefully intent on providing us years of wonderful story telling.

Star Trek: Enterprise: The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing (Star Trek : Enterprise) Overview

At the start of the twenty-first century, unconditional war swept across the Earth. A war that engulfed the great and the small, the rich and the poor, giving no quarter. Each side strove for unconditional victory, and as battle built upon battle, the living began to envy the dead.

Chastised by the cataclysm that they had unleashed, the governments of Earth came together. Humanity vowed to put an end to war and to strive for the betterment of every living creature. A united Earth created Starfleet, an interstellar agency whose mission was to explore the cosmos, to come in peace for all mankind. It was a naïve wish that was battered by interstellar realities, yet man persists in the belief that peace is the way. Banding together with other powers to form a Coalition of Planets, humanity hopes that the strength each can offer the other will allow for peaceful exploration.

However, the rise of the Coalition strikes dread within the Romulan Star Empire. They feel its growing reach will cut them off from what is rightfully theirs. The Romulans know that the alliance is fragile, that the correct strategy could turn allies into foes. Perfecting a way of remotely controlling Coalition ships and using them as weapons against one another, the Romulans hope to drive a wedge of suspicion and mistrust between these new allies.

One Starfleet captain uncovers this insidious plot: Jonathan Archer of the Enterprise. Determined not to lose what they have gained, outmanned and outgunned, the captains of Starfleet stand tall, vowing to defend every inch of Coalition space until the tide begins to turn.

The Romulans now plan to strike at what they see as the heart of their problem. With nothing left to lose, the Romulan Star Empire engages in all-out war against humanity, determined once and for all to stop the human menace from spreading across the galaxy.

The Art of Star Wars, Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

The Art of Star Wars, Episode III - Revenge of the Sith Review

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R30JL7A59FWFBR Putting this book down is difficult after you flip through a few pages. There are hundreds of pieces of conceptual art and beautiful paintings. It is apparent right from the start that George Lucas only hire the best artists for his movie.

The art genre is science fiction. You'll see a lot of concept art on cityscape, robots, planets, costumes, creatures, architecture, props and characters relating to the Star Wars movie. This book is all about art, you won't see any movie stills.

There are two versions of the book. The one with the movie script has 272 pages. The one I'm holding has only 224 pages.

Design concepts are explained for the characters and set. There's not much text but enough. The level of detail, effort and creativity displayed by the artists is simply marveling. This genre is really a playground for artists to explore with their imagination.

For Star Wars fans, there's no reason not to get this book. For artbook lovers, especially those who like sci-fi, this book should be on your shopping list also.

Wild Space (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)

Wild Space (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) Review

I was surprised to find Star Wars The Clone Wars Wild Space by Karen Miller a very enjoyable read. I've avoided reading any Star Wars books since the infamous death of Chewbacca (no thanks to R. A. Salvatore being the chief culprit) in 1999 and haven't been too interested in keeping up with the continuous adventures of a very old Luke & family. With the prequels and the Clone Wars movie/TV show, I had my Star Wars fix anyway.

In my quest to read every book I've ever wanted to, I came across Wild Space. Seeing as it wasn't one of the original Clone Wars novels which are now full of contradictions to the TV series, I was willing to give it a try.

My favorite part about the book is that, finally, some light is shed on the relationship between Bail Organa and Obi-Wan Kenobi. I found it odd that Princess Leia's comment, "Years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars," has absolutely no credibility after watching the movies, but here it is addressed.

Though the summary suggests the entire book is about Bail and Obi-Wan, the beginning chapters deal with what happened directly after Episode II, and the story weaves in plots from the animated film and series quite naturally. Miller builds on everything we know about the characters and makes it come alive, especially when dealing with Anakin and his new Padawan Ahsoka. Palpatine, who has always been written distinctly different than Darth Sidious before Episode III, is now able to express (through thought) his dislike for Yoda, Jar Jar, and Obi-Wan.

I only had mild complaints after finishing. Firstly, Yoda felt distinctly out of character, as did several other Jedi. Secondly, there were obscure references to events that obviously happened in other books. The most jarring of these was 'Siri' who apparently was, at some point, a romantic-interest for Obi-Wan. After seeing the series, a reference to the Duchess Satine would have made more sense. The Sith artifacts definitely seemed to have a back-story that I was unaware of.

All in all, this was a fun and exciting book. Not perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, but keeps in line with the chronology that is George Lucas approved and was a fast, pleasant read.

Wild Space (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) Overview

The Clone Wars have exploded across the galaxy as Republic forces and Separatists struggle to gain the upper hand. But while the Jedi generals work tirelessly to defeat Count Dooku and his rebels, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is hatching his own dark plans.

The Separatists have launched a sneak attack on Coruscant. Obi-Wan Kenobi, wounded in battle, insists that Anakin Skywalker and his rookie Padawan Ahsoka leave on a risky mission against General Grievous. But when Senator Bail Organa reveals explosive intelligence that could turn the tide of war in the Republic’s favor, the Jedi Master agrees to accompany him to an obscure planet on the Outer Rim to verify the facts. What Obi-Wan and Bail don’t realize is that they’re walking into a deadly trap concocted by Palpatine . . . and that escape may not be an option.

Inspired by the full-length animated feature film Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the brand-new TV series, this thrilling adventure is filled with provocative, never-before-revealed insights into the characters of Obi-Wan, Anakin, Padme, Yoda, Count Dooku, and many other Star Wars favorites.

Star Wars: Vector Volume 1

Star Wars: Vector Volume 1 Review

Just to be clear, I've only read the first part of this book that goes with the KOTOR comics, not the part that goes with Dark Times.

I was concerned with this story because I knew that it was part of a grand crossover between the various Star Wars comics. I was worried that they would have to stretch the story too much or add elements that didn't flow with the existing story arc. I couldn't have been more wrong. I found this story to be intriguing and right in line with the overall story arc of KOTOR. I think they did an excellent job of tying the story into a crossover. I had to peek at the Dark Times part of the story to get an idea of what to expect when I catch up on the Dark Times series.

The art work was good, but not great. I really enjoyed the realistic style of the previous artist for KOTOR. I still like the style of the new artist, but it looks a little rough. I think the art has the potential to be good in future books, but it's not quite there yet.

Overall, a very enjoyable book. I can't wait to read the second half.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Ultimate Battles

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Ultimate Battles Review

The Star Wars animated series, Clone Wars, is a breath of fresh air on TV these days. There are no snotty kids, no absentee parents, no terrible animation, just good quality, story and art. What else would you expect, however.

Mr Fry has produced a book that is ideal for kids aged 5-70 who love Star Wars. The text is aimed at a younger age level, but the graphics and additional information is welcome. I have not seen many of the Clone Wars episodes, but thank DK for such a volume that provides pertinent information on them.

The graphics are drawn from the series, and the factoids are suitable. It is easy to tell this book 'suffers' from tight editing. (ha!)

With Clone Wars a hit on TV, and books like this, it will be around for a long time.

Kudos. Does this mean that volume 2 will be out next year?
