Star Wars Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook, Saga Edition Review

My first fave is 4e. That being said being my second favorite out of the plethora of games I've read and played? That's not a bad deal at all. (Number three would be Savage Worlds.)
Star Wars Saga if you couldn't guess is the current Star Wars system. It can be run in varying Eras of play depending on which supplement books you own or are willing to buy. The core book can be run in any Era of play and introduces you to the base mechanics of the game, which are in my opinion the best evolution of the 3e and Modern D20 rule sets. All of the good very little of the bad remains. That being said, it's not quite as refined as Fourth Edition in some places, but that's a minor quibble.
The previous two editions of Star wars were craptastic in gameplay and balance. *ESPECIALLY Ship Combat!* Force powers in the previous two editions were far too over the top to the point that much like a 3e caster frankly there wasn't a point in being anything else which really hurt the game. To say nothing of the over complicated skill list, rank system, and over abundance of Repeat Classes. In short they were a Train Wreck that we only played a handful of times.
Saga Fixes ALL of these problems of the 3e and Modern D20 line. It doesn't have healing surges, extended rests or milestones which are things I would really like to have. But the game is still amazingly good.
Shortly after 4e came out I turned a friend towards Saga because I wanted to see the game that helped 4e become what it was. I saw a really good system, possessing most of what I had done to 3e at my table house rule wise as it was and garbaging the things I didn't like. It also made me think This is Star Wars.
We played it shortly after I turned him over to it and it was a blast. I still had things I doubted about it, but for the most part those have gone away as rain drops of complaints in a sea of fantastic, fast and cinematic Gameplay. The system is also flexible enough that I can easily port it over to other Science Fiction settings. I'm presently working on Homebrew material to run a Mass Effect game.
My only regret? That I hadn't bought this system sooner.
Saga is going away after this year. So get it while you can. You won't be disappointed. If you like RPGS this is worth picking up. If you like Star Wars this is a must have. If you like Scifi in general this is a Must have. If you like all of the above you should be smacked for not owning this sooner!
